MORE INFO ON OLD TOWN
There is nothing like being a local in NOTL. All the perks of a top-notch destination with the convenience of home.
Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, or NOTL to locals, comprises of the original township centred on Queen Street that grew up around the important military outpost of Fort George. This area quickly became a hub of British loyalists fleeing from the American Revolution at the end of the 18th century. In 1792, NOTL (then known as Newark) became the first capital of Upper Canada (the province that would become Ontario.) The original meeting site of the first provincial parliament is still a part of Fort George, a National Historic Site.
The residential area of Old Town was rebuilt in the mid-19th century, and many homes in this area still display the distinct architectural characteristics of this time, including southern colonial revival homes and English cottages.
Contemporary Old Town has become a premium tourist destination due to its quaint beauty, the Shaw Festival and excellent restaurants, not to mention the nearby wineries that made Niagara’s viticulture famous. Many residents convert their homes into lucrative and well-received Bed & Breakfasts during the high parts of the tourist season.
Oh, and be sure to take advantage of being a local by attending Summer Supper Market and the Jackson-Triggs concert series for musical acts like Sam Roberts Band, Norah Jones and The Arkells.
